Breaking: Gill Properties planning mixed-use project on White Station by Jacob Steimer
Gill Properties Inc. is planning another major development — this one on White Station Road, just north of Poplar Avenue.
The one-story project, which is designed to hold 27,000 square feet, will stretch across the five parcels between the Orion Federal Credit Union and the Girl Scouts Heart of the South Council Headquarters on the west side of White Station Road.
Gill Properties' Brown Gill said he is hoping for both retail and office users, noting that both have been successful north of Poplar near White Station.
"I feel like there is still demand in East Memphis for retail and office," Gill said.
Gill Properties is currently in the construction phase on the $120 million TraVure mixed-use project in Germantown, and the company's 60,000-square-foot East Memphis office project on Cherry Road was approved by the Land Use Control Board on Oct. 12.
Each of the five parcels set to be used for the White Station project — which will be called "The Grove at White Station" — contains buildings originally designed as single family homes. However, four of the five houses are now used commercially.
Gill said he came to an agreement with the five property owners earlier this year, about 12 months after initially approaching them. He is hoping to keep some of the existing "monster oaks" on the property.
Gill plans to submit the project to the Division of Planning and Development next week. He expects the project to break ground in spring 2019.
Fisher Arnold's Michael Rogers engineered the project, and Looney Ricks Kiss (LRK) architect Victor Buchholz designed it.
"I fell in love with what LRK did at Saddle Creek," Gill said.
