MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A “mixed-use destination” with a new restaurant is planned for a prominent East Memphis corner that was home to the recently demolished Houston’s restaurant.

Gill Properties and Horn Ventures announced plans Tuesday for the spaces at 4990 and 5000 Poplar. The former restaurant has been removed, and an adjacent First Horizon bank is set for demolition.

In its place, developers plan a two-story, 50,000-square-foot building with office and retail space, and 60 underground parking spaces in addition to surface parking.

Plans also include an adjacent 170-seat restaurant to be called “The Tradition,” set to open in late 2027 or early 2028.

The ownership team for The Tradition includes Moises Hernandez, former executive chef at Houston’s, who is now working with Crosstown’s Briza restaurant.

Developers say they want the project, which will include premium materials and refined architecture, to be a catalyst for redevelopment in the area.

“We want this corner to reflect the best of Memphis,” Gill said in a news release. “Our hope is that this project strengthens the East Memphis community, supports surrounding businesses, and sets a high bar for future development along Poplar.”
